PEBBLES TO PEARLS

Empowering Young Minds: Transforming Literacy and Numeracy Across Rural Ghana

Since February 2021, the Olinga Foundation, in partnership with Pebbles to Pearls, has been dedicated to transforming literacy and numeracy outcomes through the innovative ALfA Pedagogy. This project has already impacted over 45 schools in rural Ghana by implementing teacher training, establishing reading clubs, and fostering deep community engagement. As we enter our second year (2024–2025) in the Ayensuano district, our mission is to deepen this impact by reaching 12 additional schools, equipping teachers with step-by-step methodologies, and providing vital scholarships to needy but brilliant students. Together with partners like the Ghana Education Service (GES) and DEVI SANSTHAN, we are shaping a brighter, more literate future for every child.

Our impact is driven by the evidence-based ALfA approach, a collaborative methodology that utilizes random learner pairing, teacher-learner demonstrations, and weekly GROW circles to track progress. The results of this intervention are profound: endline assessments from 2025 show substantial gains in reading proficiency across Primary 3 to Primary 5. Notably, Primary 4 students saw advanced-level performance jump from 56.44% to 79.17%, while Primary 5 reached a staggering 91.66% proficiency. In the Teacher Mante Zone alone, we have reached nearly 1,000 learners and mentored 18 teachers, proving that with your support, we can achieve remarkable educational breakthroughs in just 55 days.

ACCELERATING LEARNING FOR ALL (ALfA) Eastern Region

The Accelerating Learning for All program implemented by the Olinga Foundation for Human Development is an ongoing activity that enables children, adults alike to learn foundational literacy and numeracy in 55 days through peer-learning and hands-on-activities.

Accelerating Learning for All involves:

• Encouraging student engagement and resource allocation. • Connecting lessons to student’s passions. • Focusing on grade-level learning outcomes.

Scholarships for Girls:

The Olinga Foundation for Human Development recognizes that education is the foundation for a nation’s economic, social and political development. It is also a factor in breaking the cycle of poverty. Since most of the girls in our program schools face financial barriers, the Olinga Foundation introduced the above scholarship scheme for ten highly intelligent but needy girls who are transitioning from basic six to junior high school. Under the scheme, each selected girl was supplied with following items. Hea teachers along with the District education officers were on the selection panel. • Two school uniforms
• Two pairs of shoes
• Notebooks and pens.

Guidance and Counselling Workshop

Another component of activities is the guidance and counseling workshop for the holistic development of young girls. When girls lack a sense of higher purpose and direction, they are vulnerable to influences that can keep them in a cycle of subjugation and poverty. Guidance and counseling and empowerment workshops were organized in August to assist P6 level girls and boys (100). We next will be conducting another counseling clinic in Anumpapam Circuit for basic six and basic seven and eight students in January 2026.
